January Best of the Web (social media)

Every day I marvel at the tidal wave of postings, news, comments and observations about social media. Out of this stream I handpicked a few samples of blogs this month I thought were particularly good, either because they provided useful tips, insights, or understanding—or I just liked them for other reasons. So this is far from a scientific sampling but a great array of postings by any measure.  I also threw in some misc favorite articles and blogs, such as one looking at Apple in a post-Jobs world.

My next piece will focus on my favorite postings about Twitter, a platform that is exploding in popularity.

Obama: The Viral President

As I’m watching Obama’s inauguration today, and the throngs of people braving sub-freezing weather, I keep asking the same question: what makes this man so captivating? Yes, he’s a great orator. But it’s more than a solid speech and slick delivery. It’s a bigger package that involves many facets, some emotional, some intellectual, some intangible, and some I don’t completely understand. This is what makes him perfect for the new Digital Age (or Conversation Age).

Technology allows someone like an Obama to be a sort of electrifying event onto himself—and spread virally, effortlessly. Everything he does spreads like wildfire. If Clinton was the Teflon President, Obama is the Viral President.

Don’t get this confused with the viral techniques his campaign employed for almost two years. (more…)
